Rome's subway system is one of the most useful means of transportation in the city. Although the bus run frequently, they are often crowded , many people preferring the metro. Tickets for buses or subways are available at tabacchis, bars, or vending machines at metro stations and major bus stops.

The standard ticket is called B.I.T., costs € 1.00. and is valid for one subway ride or a 75 minute ride with the bus. The B.I.G. ticket costs € 4.00. and is available for for unlimited metro, bus, and train travel in Rome, including Ostia. At €11.00, the B.T.I. is a 3-day tourist ticket available for all common transportation. The weekly ticket, C.I.S., is a ticket valid for a week with the same features as the B.I.G.

The taxi system is fairly complicated and not recommended for tourists. The meter starts at €2.33 from 7am-10pm Mon-Sat (holidays not included); €4.91 from 10pm-7am every day; €3.36 from 7am-10pm Sundays and holidays and 11 eurocents are charged per 19.2 seconds.
